    Dark Moon Over Kahl

Post  Antinthe on Thu Jan 31, 2013 11:34 pm

It is a brisk and slightly foggy evening, balanced precariously on the edge of summer and fall. The sun has yet to disappear over the horizon, throwing a wide variety of colors onto the gently rolling surface of the ocean, stretching nearly as far as the eye can see to both the north and south. To the east lies the country of Welymn, with its shores visible yet too far to reach without quite a swim. To the west, Kahl. Hardly the size of a continent, yet more than large enough to house a great variety of landmarks, this quickly-approaching landmass will soon be the home to most people aboard a worn and seaworthy vessel, known somewhat ironically as The Basilisk. In truth, this refurbished fishing vessel doubtlessly has few people aboard who have ever seen a basilisk, let alone lived long enough to talk about it.

A smattering of soldiers-to-be are parked both above and below decks, wearing all sorts of armors ranging from cobbled-together leather ensembles to slightly dented breastplates and beyond. While the captain leans against the deck's railing and barks orders to his crew, two people of interest are on tne opposite side of the ship; one is a tall and lithe half-elven man with red hair, who will be much more interesting shortly. Beside him is a much shorter gnome, with packs slung across his back and held loosely atop the deck. He has no hair, but a well-trimmed goatee and dark green eyes, along with a fairly flat, unenthused expression. His clothing is simple - tunic, breeches, jackboots, and a belt - and his skin is tan enough to suggest the life of a working man.

The longer they sail, the closer the wooden docks of Port Ariche come rolling into view. The island is hardly more than a stone's throw away from the mainland, yet the ferry is nothing less than a massive cargo ship in function, shunting everyone from place to place at a fairly slow speed. The closer the island becomes, the thicker the fog seems to be, until the call for the anchor being dropped and sails furled echoes across the decks.

As the ship lurches to a halt and the wooden gangplank is extended, a few of the half-armored hopefuls trundle down the decks and onto the dock. The first glance into the city is a grim and disgusting one, given the fog, the faint glimmer of a smoldering building or two, and a few handfuls of ragged and distraught-looking civilians milling about. Large boxes and barrels are rolled off of the ship, along with a small cart (which the gnome goes to retrieve - Zook, his chosen moniker, being well-known to his redheaded hirer and confidant), which are quickly swept up by dockhands and some very hungry-looking folk. The only guard presence seems to be men in leathers with shortspears and maces standing near the city's half-destroyed stone walls, along with a gate missing one of its massive wooden doors. Times have been better in Ariche.

With the boat finally anchored, Norin throws on his travelers cloak and picks up his knapsack. Shaking off the cool damp breeze, he heads to disembark and help his comrade collect their things.

The door of a supposed tavern near the docks is thrust open, the resulting slam barely registering with the noise being produced in the area already. Out walks quite possibly one of the meanest looking elves the island has seen – then again they’re not in high population anyway. She brushes back and errant curl of ebon hair and snorts before stomping a few more feet and turns around, hands on her hips. She’s trailed out by a small gaggle of armed and armored men and women who all seem to be talking at her at once. The hand used to brush her hair back comes back up again to rub the side of her head in a frustrated manner before her right arm snaps out and points down the street with an extended finger.

No sooner is that group ‘assisted’ does she sigh loudly and roll her right arm about at the shoulder before pulling back on the limb, stretching it for a good second or so before she cocks her hands on her hips and overlooks the vessel that just came into dock, frowning.

Zook is busy trying to find the pair's things, aside from what they chose to carry along with themselves in their travel packs. Nothing too out of the ordinary, other than a ladder and a few other questionable tools, which are piled into a cart, with a somewhat unsettled horse being coaxed out of the ship's hold. Apparently, renting a horse is too unreliable.

"Not the greatest first impression." The gnome mumbles in an oddly deep and carrying voice for a man his size, gesturing towards the city with his head; he fiddles with the horse's bridle as he speaks. "You have a plan, though, right? We're not just going to be a zombie's snack as we wander around blindly?"

The group of people pointed off and yelled at by the somewhat off-putting elf all shift and start to head in the direction she pointed, speaking amongst themselves quickly. While they hardly seem to be a cohesive unit, at least they're working together somewhat.
At the same time, several of the ex-seafarers come scooting from the docks and approach the woman as quickly as they can manage, dragging along knapsacks and long weapons alike.

The Moistened Rat is not a wonderful port-side establishment, so it's safe to bet that whoever drinks there isn't the most fluffy and agreeable of people.

"Hrm." Stooping over to pick up a stray sack of dried fruit. Norin ponders the various options. "Well, Zook." standing up with a small grunt, Norin quickly surveys the area. "I didn't come here with any other plan then ascertain how serious is the threat of the walking dead." "Looking at the attention that elf is garnering, it might be a good place to start there." Scratching his chin he glances at his small, grump companion.

"And who knows?" he smirked. "With a name like the Moistened Rat, maybe they serve good ale?" Brushing off his cloak, he heads towards the elf.

As more people start approaching Lwyn, she looks even more annoyed than before. A hand comes up and she paws her face dutifully before taking a deep breath and… snorts. Real ladylike, this one. One would assume with the way she’s tattoo’d up like a walking shrine she would be more helpful, but the next few words that come out of her mouth denote otherwise.

“I’m not a bloody tour guide you louts.” She states gruffly, arms folding across her stomach. “Those of you looking to sign up just follow this road to the northern plaza, save all of your questions until you get there and then drown someone else with your quandaries. I have no time for it.” She grumbles and narrows her eyes briefly before standing up straight, nose wrinkled slightly.

“And don’t let any of the fiends grab you, there’s already too much to do without more bodies piling up.”

"We'll be lucky if the rat isn't moist because it was in the ale." Norin's companion sounds hilariously underwhelmed, and for good reason. As his partner moves, he grabs the steed's reins and gives a gentle tug, coaxing the cart-bearing beast of burden forward at a slow and careful pace.

When told to flock off, the small cluster of people give their grumbling words of regret as they stride away from the cranky elf, bumping shoulders with one another as they go. It's easy to overhear what they have to say, things like "What did she mean about the fiends?" and "I wonder how many losses there's really been?" They don't sound to be too awfully educated, but fighting a war doesn't require a battlefield full of geniuses.

Undeterred by her comments and intimidating behavior, Norin walks right up to the elf and stretches out his hand. "Hello." He says with a smile.
"I heard elves were uncommon in this area, especially ones so...."

    Norin looks her over quickly.

    "....Tattooed."

Lwyn had been preoccupied by a seagull flying too low and perks up slightly as she’s spoken to once more, except this time it’s not another annoying foreigner! Yet. She peers at the man and blinks a few times before looking him over briefly, gaze lingering on his outstretched hand.

“I wish I could say idiots were uncommon but…” She shrugs and leaves it at that, reaching out to shake the fellow’s hand firmly. “I know where my beliefs stand is all. Let me guess, though; the temple?” She states before readying her pointing finger, ears pinning back slightly.

Norin chuckles, "Hold your pointing, I can see the path, just trying to be polite." He scrunches his face in a rueful look,"Sadly it seemed I failed."

"Oh well." He laughs, "My name is Norin, my gnomish friend with the cart is Zook, and we are here to see what aid we can bring to this blighted land."

Norin gestures towards the path towards the temple, "Care to accompany us?"

“You wouldn’t be the first to have tried and not succeed.” Lwyn replies as she lowers her hand, blinking rapidly before shrugging and turning about to start along the path.

“I have business to attend to at the temple anyway, so I may as well head that way.” She states thoughtfully, stretching some more before flexing the fingers of her left hand.

“Name is Lwyn, I would say it’s a pleasure to meet both of you but circumstances keep much of anything from being enjoyable these days.”

The gnome nods his head in a very casual sort of greeting, but doesn't seem awfully enthralled with the conversation. After a few lobbed volleys of sentences back and forth, he climbs into the cart and casually shoves a few bags aside, then sits down and takes up the reins like he's piloting an over-sized chariot, waiting for the call to move. Until then, he rests his shoulder against the cart's wooden side and spectates the going-ons of the dock.
"Nice to meetcha." He fires back, rousing from his daydream fairly quickly.

One the pair starts to move, he gives the leads a snap and forward lurches the cart, bouncing over the cobbled streets at a lackadaisical pace. Unfortunately, the usually-soothing clack of wood on stone is often interspersed with a distant cry of pain or the wailing of the sick, leaving the port side of the city a touch on the unsettling side.
The road to the temple is well-documented and kept moderately clean, aside from the debris of long-closed shops and broken cart wheels. As they make their way, however, a flock of the residential seagulls are suddenly startled by something stirring off to their right, amidst a group of abandoned market stalls with various gaudy covers and tents of many awful hues. As they squall and take off into the sky, an uneasy silence overtakes this side of the street.

Both Norin and Lwyn would easily hear some very unsettling noises. Namely, some very wet and sickening squelching sounds, along with tearing, chomping, and general noises of enthusiasm over something being chewed upon. The sound is originating from the market stalls, vaguely.

Partially obscured by a stall is a small stream of blood and several dessicated, hunched-over humanoid creatures all gathered around a fairly non-responsive person, with leather armor torn open and his stomach likely in the same way. Two of the humanoids seem old, wrinkly, rotten, and outright missing skin patches - not a pleasant sight. The third is slightly taller, and his skin is practically pressed to his musculature, with no hair on his head and a glow in his eyes that is severely inhuman. Thankfully, it's busy chewing on the poor soul, and none of them seem to spot the trio on the road.

Only Norin has made eye contact with the beasts, but pointing them out to Lwyn (or Lwyn following the source of the noise) wouldn't be very difficult.

Noticing the twisted feast going on in the nearby stall, Norin's face goes blank ,his voice emotionless, "Lywn, Zook, we have company, Zook hand me my bow."

Throwing his mind back to the lessons learned in his youth, Norin prepares to cleanse the festering corpses in front of him.

"Eh?" Lwyn states before stopping mid-stride and frowning at the sound of viscera and gristle being gnawed upon. Her attention snaps towards the source of the sounds and without much thought she slides into an offensive stance with her hands held in front of her briefly before they snake down and part her battle-dress at the sides before coming back up with a razor sharp kama in each hand, broken chains dangling from the ends of the handles. She twirls them each once before gripping them firmly and launching herself towards the festering rotters and their meal.

Upon closing the gap she skids and whips her right arm back and forward, attempting to hook one of the smaller creatures about the throat before letting the weapons edge do the rest.

Zook bats his eyes a few times as he tries to figure out what's going on, but is quick to dig through the pair's belongings once placed on bow retrieval duty. It doesn't take the smaller man very long to find Norin's weapon, and once it's in his hands, he immediately passes it to the hunter (with any arrows he might require, if he doesn't have his quiver!) Other than that, he only urges the horse to move away from what will doubtlessly be a scrap.

Lwyn, on the other hand, manages to bound through the abandoned market and find her first mark without much of an issue. As the undead are fairly invested in turning another man into a pile of food, they seem oblivious to her approach and one of the rotten ones catches a blade in the back of its neck for his trouble. With a sudden chorus of growling, gnashing noise, they lurch and start to straighten up, all eyes falling on the closest snack - the elf, of course.

The ranger's knowledge and hatred of undead allows him to identify them easily. The shorter rotters seem to be standard reanimated corpses, zombies, while the taller and skinner one is either a ghast or a ghoul. Being identical, it's a crapshoot to identify.

While its compatriots are busy being cut into by the monk's kamas, the lithe undead decides it may be best to harass her from behind. It scampers around and slides into position before throwing itself forward, gnashing its teeth and trying to take a chunk out of Lwyn's side!

Its semi-clever tactic seems to pay off, as it manages to sink its festering, disgusting maw into the elf's side. The pain is immediate, but not debilitating - but she'll definitely be bleeding a little.

"Lywn watch out!" Norin shouts, "The Ghoul's bite is diseased!" Assuming the proper stance, Norin nocks an arrow, muscles straining to pull back the string.

    Inhale.

With a quiet sigh, Norin sets the arrow free, free to fly to its target, right between the shoulders of ghoul as it lunges to feast on a warmer meal.

Either caught up in the moment or just bad luck, Norin’s warning reaches the elven woman’s ears too late as she’s Hungry-Hungry-Hippo’d. While it’s certainly not her first time being bit, one does not simply eschew the fact they have diseased and un-flossed teeth sinking into their gut. She grits her own teeth and plants her feet before taking the kama that started this brawl and attempts to drive the sickle point into her assailant. Change in position would show the bite managed to do some damage as blood seeped into the sash about her waist from the wound.

Lwyn's aim is quite good, considering she wheels around and manages to pierce the shambling ghoul between the ribs with the point of her sickle. His flesh is practically paper thin and easily cut, coaxing a loud, unholy growl of pain to come from between bloodstained and gritted teeth. It recoils slightly, but doesn't react yet.

As she turns away, however, the zombies throw themselves forward in a sudden lurch, throwing out their arms to try and batter and haymaker the unlucky elf into a pile of goop.

One of them is far too lost to rigor mortis to make meaningful contact, arms harmlessly bouncing off of the monk's shoulder. The second, however, practically trips all over itself as it smashes the woman in the back.

Zook dives for cover in the cart and starts to root around noisily, cursing as he searches for something.

Suddenly, the ghoul breaks away from the fight and goes galloping towards Norin on all fours, clawing at the ground as it runs. Much like before, it half-leaps at the man and tries to sink teeth into flesh, only to skid right by him in a clear and terrible miss, ending up easily within arm's reach, slightly to his left.

Twisting to face the ghoul as it skids around him, Norin's bow hits the ground with a light clatter. In one smooth motion Norin draws a worn mace etched with the blazing sun from beneath his cloak.

He swings with both hands, body shaking from the strain of battle, he arcs the mace down towards the back of the ghoul's head.

As the ghoul breaks away, Lwyn blinks a few times before she’s flailed against. With an annoyed grunt the muscled woman plants her feet and twists her right foot slightly as she lashes out at the two remaining rotters with a kama each, chains jingling softly as the elven woman practically spins about in her attempt to gouge, eviscerate and just general ruin the day of some undead critter. Her battle-dress flies up briefly before wrapping about her legs slightly as she comes to a halt, left kama held in a reverse-grip with the right held properly, but both held so that the curve sickle could potentially catch and maim something.

Norin isn't as luck as Lwyn; his mace swing, as mighty and well-angled as it is, whiffs over the ghoul's head and connects with nothing but air for a solid half-second. When the macehead crashes into the splintered wood of a vendor's stall, however, it smashes through one of the upper supports and knocks the whole thing a little cock-eyed. The roof sags and starts to fold in on itself promptly.

Across the field, the monk twirls around and shifts her weapons about gracefully, and shows off what years of training in a cloister can do. Both sickles find their marks with hard, well-aimed strikes, the curved tips sinking into the cheek and out through the opposite side of the jaw of one rotter, and the other ends up with a kama jutting from his temple for a few moments. They stumble and lurch to retaliate, but they haven't quite taken hits enough to drop them.

Both lucky and unlucky, the lesser-damaged rotter sways his arms into a bash, spins on his heel, and something in his leg buckles as he misses everything but the air. It collapses and flails about comedically, but the other zombie manages to clip Lwyn for a fairly solid strike.

The ghoul, cackling from its success at not dying, lunges forward at the mace-wielding half-elf, claws outstretched, and it tries to rake the unlucky archer after his weapon swap. Training comes in handy, though, and blocking the lurch would be fairly easy - or simply stepping back out of the way.

Zook finally stands up in the cart, cocking what seems to be a fairly small crossbow, but doesn't do much other than wait to see how things go.

(Lwyn takes...four points of damage! Zombie #1 is prone, zombie #2 is near destruction, so on.)

With a grunt, Norin yanks the mace out of the broken stall in time to dodge the ghoul. Enraged with the ghoul not re-dying, Norin stumbles slightly as the weight of the mace throws him off balance.

He quickly gathers himself and swings again, aiming for the lower part of the spine, hoping to snap the ghoul in half like he did the market stall.

Welp, that did it. The normally stoic woman – even though her attitude is pretty sour – snaps. It’s not an obvious snapping, though, she still looks entirely too calm for someone who has been bitten and thunked across the skull by zombies but anyone looking close enough would notice a very subtle twitch of her left eye and if they are listening closely one could hear the tiny snap of what is probably her last strain of restraint. She brings her limbs in close and jumps slightly, corkscrewing once in the air before her right foot is snapped out and slammed down for the prone zombie’s head. With the aforementioned foot planted she finishes her spin, left leg lashing straight out as she attempts to carve the other zombie’s head in with the heel of her foot.
